[NEWS] The Sunday Spew (5th January 2014)

Good evening and welcome to the very first Sunday Spew of 2014! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and a smashing New Year, ushered in surrounded by loved ones or friends. Or your duvet and your favourite box-set, because to me both sound equally appealing.

Much has happened in geek news since our last update but to keep things as short (like me!) and sweet (unlike me!) as we possibly can, we’ll get down to unwrapping the best of the gifted goodies.

LAUNCHING PROBE – A couple of weeks previously, before the festive fever set in, I heard word that BioWare has been making some significant progress with the new Mass Effect game, telling of strides in the right direction and hinting at a late 2014/early 2015 release. One employee took to Twitter to extol the virtues of ME4 and gave his first impressions. “Ambitious, beautiful and fresh, but recognizable” would be adjectives we’d expect to hear when describing something based within this universe, but methinks it more likely that the possible release date itself is ambitious, as Garrus is still off somewhere doing those never-ending calibrations.

A first official image for Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was released and met with an assortment of reactions from fans across the Interwebs. The Escapist yesterday published an article loosely detailing the official synopsis of the film, which you can read about here, if you give a continental.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK… AGAIN – This afternoon NME reported that Star Wars spin-off films are in the works. There have been various rumours as to who these spin-offs will focus on, but now it has been revealed that bounty hunter character Boba Fett is definitely to be one of them. Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) has been confirmed to write, who in turn has revealed that he will be working with X-Men: Days of Future Past screenwriter, Simon Kinberg, on this project. We all knew this kind of saturation would be coming after Disney conquered Lucasfilm, but I, for one, think a film about Boba Fett would be Mandalorian Armour-lickin’ good.

YOU’VE BEEN X-ED – The only scene with Anna Paquin as Rogue has been cut from X-Men: Days of Future Past. According to director Bryan Singer, it was “unfortunate” but through editing the sequence became “extraneous”. We’ll probably get to see it on the DVD, but for now, no more Rogue. How do we feel about that? Can’t say I feel much of anything myself.

In TRAILERTOWN, we’ve been given a few treats to gaze upon and ponder over. A House of Cards teaser emerged; this one featuring most deliciously sinister and frighteningly clever political aficionado Mr. Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey. The teaser features him doing absolutely nothing and is hands down the oddest trailer I think I’ve ever seen. House of Cards Season 2 premieres February 14th, exclusive to Netflix. Any MARSHMALLOWS out there? Veronica Mars fans were also treated to the official Mars movie trailer ahead of its March 14th release date. It’s ridiculously long and full of fan-service spoilers, so don’t watch it if, like me, you’re at all excited for Veronica’s long-awaited return.

And now, finally, our weekly BATS VS SUPE segment. Award winning Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio has been drafted in to help with The Man of Steel II rewrites. Gal Gadot is reportedly undertaking an unenviable fitness and physical regime for her upcoming role as Wonder Woman, which is good, because as it stands a strong gust of wind could probably knock her over. Numerous different, and unverified, I might add, sources claim that Joaquin Phoenix may be in the running to play Lex Luthor, while others are still maintaining that Bryan Cranston has been the studio’s best kept secret to take on the role of Superman’s baldy arch-nemesis.

I’ve had a busy return to blog form this week on The Spew as I rushed to compile the lists of everything I’d seen over the break. We started with a review of Joss Whedon’s passion project, Much Ado About Nothing, and followed that up with the pretty scathing written impressions of Fast & Furious 6. Last night I published another narrative inspired by Telltale Games, but in a refreshing change from the norm this one had no zombies in it, rather it involved the cast of disused fairytale creatures in The Wolf Among Us.

My thanks this week to to both Tom Ford of Movies & Music Cafe and my buddy Pewie from The PewPew Diaries for my fifth and sixth Blog of the Year Awards. Now I can have the same number of stars for both sides of the picture thingy and there won’t be unfilled ones and my OCD will be silenced. Thank you both for your kind words. Also gratitude to Cara of Silver Screen Serenade and Alex Raphael for their Versatile Blog nominations. If you haven’t yet checked out any of the blogs mentioned above, dear readers, go and do so now. You won’t be disappointed.

I’ve been reading a lot since my return, and fully catching up with my favouritest blogs has proven to be an arduous, but wholly worthwhile effort. With authors everywhere putting in great work to compile their best of lists for 2013, Sidekick Reviews gave us a brilliant list of his best moments with Sidekick’s Naughty or Nice List for Movie News 2013. Tom from Digital Shortbread with the 2013 DigiBread Awards told us about his tastiest and nastiest (among others) film experiences of the year and before Christmas Mikey & Co., the force behind Screenkicker!, gifted us with a very entertaining podcast wherein they dissected everything film-related from the last twelve months. Well worth a listen, even if you can’t understand a word and just like the accents. For your games round-ups of last year Play Legit and 1001-Up published the results of their public votes, with a few both expected and unexpected results.

Luke from Oracle of Film celebrated his blog’s first anniversary the other day, and posted a special video highlighting some of the weirdest (and funniest) search terms that amazingly brought traffic to his articles. Some time before Christmas he also posted a special video for his birthday, but this one involved a movie quiz and a bottle of Disaronno, which was consumed throughout as punishment for getting questions wrong. He got a lot of questions wrong. Luke has also done some of his own best of lists for 2013 so be sure to check them out.

Niall McArdle (AKA NiMac) published a touching tribute to all of the special talent we lost last year, in the form of his 2013 In Memoriam. This next one isn’t at all recent, though I only just stumbled across it. Liam from LIAMDOESFILM wrote an interesting article last month about director David Fincher and his supposed expressed hatred toward women. You might not agree with the angle but I found it quite absorbing and it made me rethink my opinions on the referenced films. David Fincher as an Auteur #1 is definitely worth the read.

To lighten the tone now I have Sir Issacs‘ review of The Godfather, contributed to Cara’s Resolutions series on her Silver Screen Serenade. Here’s a hint: he hated it. And to wrap up allow me to blatantly promote fellow Irish girl, janeybgood, and her brilliant blog, Cupid or Cats. Her most recent postings of Mothers Always Know Best and 15 THINGS I LEARNED FROM LIVING WITH A GUY aren’t just highly entertaining but also relatable, particularly to me, as you’ll see from the horribly personal comments I’ve made all over her blog. As a writer Janey is personable and inclusive, and I just love it when I see one of her posts pop in my feed.

I had a wonderful (and busy) Christmas. While I went to far too many parties and drank far too much grog, I also had the opportunity to watch TOO MUCH STUFF. It was amazing. I happily slogged through the majority of my must-see DVD releases from October, November and December, and watched all of Revolution (it was so much fun), Sherlock (just brilliant) and The Blacklist (had me at ‘Hello’), all while I was in my fluffy pajamas and scoffing chocolates. I played The Wolf Among Us, Bioshock Infinite, twelve consecutive hours of The Sims 3 (don’t judge, it’s a legitimate addiction) and started a brand new playthrough of Mass Effect.

We traveled up to Co. Donegal shortly after Christmas for a wedding and to ring in the New Year. Suffice it to say I’m still in recovery and seem to have come down with some manner of “man flu“. I know I’m not a man, but I seriously think I’ve been infected. It’s because of all the battering my midget liver and midget form took from all of that wine, beer and Bailey’s I’d consumed. Ah well.

Upon reflection 2013 was a bit of a schizophrenic year. It began at the lowest point it possibly could, with losing someone very young and very dear to me after a mammoth battle with illness. The aftermath of that was equally as harrowing as everyone around me tried (and continues to try) to come to terms with the loss. But to counteract that there were many personal highlights for me too. Our trip to Vegas to celebrate the OH’s 30th birthday was one, and this blogging experience has most certainly been another.

I don’t usually make New Year resolutions because I have absolutely no discipline and I never keep them, but this year I think I’ll make a few, and keep them simple. One of the most important lessons I learned in 2013 is that life is very, very short. It’s an old cliche, I know, one that everyone has used at some stage, but this year that little overused phrase has come to hold a brand new meaning for me. As such, my resolution this year will be not to spend my time running around, not to be harried or “too busy” or have to make excuses due to work or social commitments, but rather I resolve to spend more time doing the things I like to do. The things I want to do. I want to spend more time with the people I love and I want to spend more time doing the things I love.

To quote another fellow Irish blogger (we’re everywhere, it’s truly insidious), the talented AJ Vosse, I will have fun, and do better.

This has been the longest, most personal and probably (judging by the last couple of paragraphs) the most depressing edition of The Sunday Spew I’ve ever written, so without further ado I’ll run off now and leave in my place a picture of a Pug in a seal costume.

Pug Seal

  1. I too find it hard to care about no more Rogue. Big old, “Meh.”

And a pug in a seal costume? Um. That’s awesome?

    Like

  2. Well this is just the nicest comment ever. It’s so nice in fact, I wish I could fit it on a tshirt. Maybe I could fit it on a dress and wear it all the time? And then there’s the pug in a seal costume. I’m in a glass case of emotion.
Some of this made me sad though, sounds like you had a tough beginning to the year but I’m so glad to see your blog become so successful, it’s amazing. And so this doesn’t get too emotional, here’s a random funny word: badminton. No? Just me?

    • I KNOW! We could get it all printed on wallpaper! That way you could decorate an ENTIRE ROOM with all of the nice things people say about your blog on it. Would be such a conversation piece. “Wtf is this?” “Why, it’s my room of lurve wallpapered with words of lurve from the people who lurve my blog!” For serial, that would be one good-lookin’ room. :D

And thank you for your kind words too. Writing helps with this kind of stuff, well at least it helps me, and also remembering that everyone has their time and everyone goes through some rotten stuff in life. Puts things in perspective! As does badminton. It’s the kind of word you hear and have to sit down on a stair when you’re half-cut because you can’t stop the giggle fit and it’s just so ridiculous. Not to mention shuttlecock? Who is responsible for that sport.

      • It could be like the scene in the Simpsons when Homer goes crazy and writes all over the wall. Except I’m not crazy. Ahem.

I always think that the one positive thing you can take from a negative experience is that it teaches you to appreciate your life more when it’s actually going well. Wow, look at me being all serious and stuff.

I just legit giggled at shuttlecock. Someone was really taking the mick when they made up badminton.

And again, thank you and as per usual, great post!

  3. SEAL PUG?! Ugggghhhh the cute. I think we should go halvsies on investing in a pug farm. I realize you can’t harvest any resources from pugs, but you CAN harvest joy. We can dress them all up and listen to their snorts and just bask in it. You in?

Also, thank you for the shoutout! Very much appreciated. I’m sorry to hear last year started off rough, but I am thrilled that decided to join WordPress. Your blog continues to bring me so much joy. Let’s have a helluva 2014, shall we? With a pug farm. ;)

    Like

    • CARA! LOL! Just lol! This is the best idea ever. “Feeling down about things or yourself? Head over to the Pug farm for some joy!” “Your lady gone and left ya for the neighbour? Come get licked by some Pugs!” That last one needs some tweaking but it would definitely work. And if the other bloggers misbehave we can threaten them with, “Be good or you’ll be sent to work at Cara’s and V’s Pug farm”. Like that episode of the Simpsons. Except they had emus. Pugs are better.

Anyway thank you for the comment, I’ll make an appointment with the bank for a business loan tomorrow. ;D I’ll drink to a helluva 2014 too.

  4. Speaking of the X-Men series… I was bummed that they only featured Gambit in one movie and not just because I find Taylor Kitsch to be droolworthy. :-) I’m so glad your blog was pointed out to me as a must follow. I enjoy you and look forward to getting to know you better in 2014.

  5. Phoenix or Cranston would be so amazing as Lex Luthor. The cast is getting bigger and bigger, I just hope the focus is Bats Vs Supe.

Great new years resolutions. It’ll bring you much joy and happiness!

Thanks so much for the shout out! Here’s to an awesome 2014!

    • Definitely agreed. Either of those gents would bring a wealth of talent and experience to the Luthor role, which is something I feel that it needs.

      Here’s to an awesome 2014 indeed! :D

  6. You sure get a lot of stuff done, V! I just got me a PS4 and its a horrific timesucker. I couldn’t post every day now if I wanted to….Hey, did you like Man of Steel? Doesn’t it sound like they’re trying to cram too much into the sequel? Even though I like Man of Steel a lot, my expectations for the sequel are lowering by the day. If it collapses under its own weight it’ll be so disappointing….

    Like

    • Ooh, what have you been playing? To be honest the only reason I’ve posted every day this week is because I had most of the posts already written up. :D I cheated. What you did every day in December was much harder, that would have driven me mad. I do miss your regular posts though, I have to say.

I did like Man of Steel, I enjoyed it a lot actually, even though it wasn’t quite as good as I was expecting it to be. Know exactly what you’re saying about the sequel. It’s a worry, I’d imagine with all of the extras they keep adding that it’s going to feel bloated, or busy, and not at all like a Superman movie. We shall see I guess.

      Like

      • Yeah, it should be Superman, not JLA Junior. I’ve been playing the PS4 version of Injustice, actually, the DC fighting game. Also, NBA 2K14 which has a very cool career mode. I’ll probably try the Killzone game next!

        Like

        • I’ve heard NBA2014 is brilliant. Not a basketball fan myself so I won’t be going near it, but everyone else seems to think it’s the best sports game since FOREVA. DC game sounds cool.

          • I’m going to do a post about Man of Steel soon, so I won’t say much here…But it drives me crazy that people compare this version with the seventies one and whine that that’s not Superman. I was so happy they just didn’t repeat that movie! This new Superman was alien and intense and actually much more like the comics version–albeit the killing of Zod is debatable. It made sense in the film, I thought.
            Ooops, fucking spoiler!

            Like

            • Yeah, what use would a remake have been? Something new, rebooted and retold was a lot better than having to sit through the same crap again, just with different actors and better special effects. No worries about the spoiler, if people haven’t seen it by now then it’s their own fault. ;P

I’ll keep an eye out for your post!

              Like

              • I figure when a movie’s been out on DVD for several months if people haven’t seen it yet they don’t really care. They may still whine, but come on! If you really wanted to see it you would have.
                P.S.
The villain in Star Trek Into Darkness is Khan and Idris Elba dies in Pacific Rim, but Ron Perlman really doesn’t. And Iron Man 3 still sucks…

  8. V you are good people :) I smiled when I saw the Revolution mention. I’ve watched every episode and ask myself why am I watching this show? I guess it’s a love/hate thing. Like I’m watching Giancarlo Esposito do his anarchy thing brilliantly always entertaining then the other actors do a flashback and they have funky wigs and makeup, and make references to “X-Files”, etc that I don’t think they should be able to remember per the storyline. But again I love the way the past season ended also (no spoilers here just in case) but wondered if you thought the writers could really deliver next season?

    Like

    • LOL I love the modern pop culture references! They might not make the most sense but they’re definitely a guilty pleasure. I’m enjoying Season 2 actually, they went in a direction I wasn’t expecting at all. The writers took an approach for Season 2 that surprised me and threw me a little, but I think that’s a good thing as I was speculating all sorts of crazy stuff.

    • I don’t know Mikey! :o It is really nice to do “nothing” from time to time though. Although I include playing games and watching dozens of episodes as part of doing nothing really, because mostly I’m just sitting on my hoop with eyes glued to the screen, curtains pulled and phone on silent.

How are you getting on with AC4? Sounds like you’re hooked. :D And back at ya, here’s to a fantastic 2014.

  11. Well, Let me start by saying that this is the first time that I have felt the need to vehemently disagree with anything you wrote. Having said that, you are easily the sweetest young lady on your side of the big pond. Truth be told, there are only a handle on this side that can match you in the sweetness department and most of those are related to me.

Now that’s settled, here’s hoping that your 2014 is filled with fun and doing all of the things that you love to do. Moreover, let’s also hope that you avoid exposure to “man flu” to whatever extent possible. I know how debilitating man flu can be. I discussed that in a health related post some time ago.

    • That is the most perfect example of man flu I have ever seen. I especially loled at the part when you claimed the thermometer was defective, because it said you only had a temperature of 104, not 120. Although truth be told, 104 is still very high and you must have felt truly awful. And your injuries vs sickness analysis is so spot on. My OH, who works with his hands constantly, is always coming home with awful looking cuts and scrapes. I’ll say, “That needs stitches”, or “Your arm will fall off if you don’t disinfect that” etc etc, but he fobs me off with waves of manly dismissal. When there’s a cold or flu involved though, it’s the end of the world. :D

      Men; you’re gas creatures altogether.

  12. It’s always hard when you lose someone close. My bestfriend died a while back. That being said I won’t shed a tear over Rogue not being in the new X-men movie. She was terrible to begin with and was nothing like the Rogue I grew up watching on tv or read in the comics.

    Like

    • I’d be inclined to agree. Although back in the day I rather liked Paquin, I never took to her portrayal of Rogue. Nothing like the character I was expecting, she’s one of the few I was disappointed in from the X movies. Very sorry to hear about your best friend.

      • Thanks. Can you believe you’re the only person that’s ever said that to me and maybe one day we’ll have a real X-men movie that’s not just centered around Wolverine.

I’m sorry to hear about the 2013 lows, but it only gets better from here. That’s why 2014 is now here! :D May it be a great one for you and the Verbal Spew. Love this page. One of my resolutions is to certainly get back around to being a more regular viewer here. I think that’s a perfectly achievable one for me. :D

I can’t friggin’ wait for X-Men: Days of Future Past and I’m not a huge fan of Rogue so it doesn’t affect me in the slightest.

“I will have fun, and do better.” sounds like a splendid resolution btw, I’ll try that. Oh and keep up the pug photos, this one is too cute for words!!

  17. Holy hell, you do get a lot of comments! Sorry to hear about the beginning of the year, but I’m very grateful that your blog’s here. I freaking love reading your stuff, although I’m always late to the party.

Rouge sucks in these films. Rouge was way cooler in the comics and TV series (agree with Drakulus. He and I seem to be agreeing on a lot of things lately. What the hell is happening in the universe?)

and yes in X3 post-credits Magneto’s powers started to come back implying the cure was totally bull shit., I mean temporary…

Big news over Christmas is pretty much that. I got big and fat over Christmas, so fat that I didn’t even fit into my work pants and on the first day had to go to the store to buy new clothes.lol (Facepalm :-) It also explains why my wife won’t sleep with me at the moment….

My daughters first birthday was on Thursday and my wife and I baked and burnt her cake……twice. What a learning curve.

Hope 2014 is going to be awesome!

    “Mental high five!”

    • Haha! Baking is hard! Harder than just plain old cooking sometimes. :D

There’s a few of us in agreement about Rogue so! Really, for a character who had a big enough role in the first film none of us ever really got attached to her at all. It seems the only one who did was Wolverine. And Bobby. But then he started holding hands and skating with Kitty and shiz. The bastard. ;P

Anyway glad to hear you’d a nice Christmas. The extra pounds from the holiday season are usually transitory so don’t worry too much about that, and a happy first birthday to your little girl!

Mass Effect 4… My, I cannot wait, although that excitement is also half mixed with nervousness, starting over etc. I have been missing Mass Effect of late, been spending all my time building in Minecraft, when my world is complete I’ll probably play it over. I always start playing the series like, “Ill pick different options this time, play more renegade, start a different relationship” aside from killing or not killing the Rachni Queen, which doesn’t make much difference, I usually pick the same options. It’s hard to be Renegade!

I love your New Years resolution. It’s basically what my nurses and doctors have been saying to me, that I need to make sure I spend time doing the things I love, I usually abandon them because “too busy” doing things that, in the long term, mean nothing, like endless cleaning. Anyway, you reminded me of a YouTube video by Wheezy Waiter, he’s totally random, but the message is awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q64IIIX7M3A

I’m glad you had a nice Christmas, oh and I totally LOVE the Sims 3 too, it’s definitely a time sink though!
Best wishes for t2014, and I can’t wait to see your upcoming posts, you are such a talented writer :)
    Take care x

    • I know exactly what you mean about ME4. Excitement and nervousness, a new beginning, how different will it be, will it feel? I’ve no doubt it will be another fantastic all-round experience, and at least we’ll still have the original trilogy for those nostalgic re-plays. Speaking of re-plays, mine are usually exactly the same too! Playing renegade is damn HARD! The only truly renegade decision I ever made was opting to let the Council die at the end of ME1, and I don’t really consider that a renegade choice at all, as it made the most sense to take the opportunity to save more lives. Maybe this time around though I’ll go with different romance options. I always kind of liked the idea of my femshep and Liara, because I like their connection. Or even Kaidan, because I grew to like him a lot in ME3.

I really liked that video you linked. I love the message. It’s important not to get caught up, I agree, and it’s so good for you in the long run to make sure you make the time to do all of the things you love and enjoy. It’s hard sometimes; you feel as though other things that come up might be more important. I regularly have to remind myself and sometimes even force myself to remember that taking time to enjoy myself is actually just as important, if not more so, than something stressful at work, or at home, or the fact that I’ve gone a week without hoovering the stairs.

It’s lovely to see you back in the blogosphere Rhio, I’ve really missed your posts, they’re always informative and poignant, and your take on games is always so much fun! My best to you in 2014. :)
