I had plenty to do during my downtime on Risa. Drink, sunbathe, pose for a sculptor as he designed a giant statue of me to be erected on my home planet in recognition for my many great deeds, strut around in a bikini, verbally abuse the monkey butlers and catch all the Pokemon. I also got the opportunity to get up to date on all of my shows (no longer to be referred to as “my stories”, because I’m already enough of a granny), and I even picked up a couple more for maximum self-absorbed, “fantasy > reality” entertainment.
As many seasons of our favourite shows depicting our favourite heroes and villains draw to a close and hurtle toward the finale twilight zone, I’ve decided to outline everything I’ve watched, and how I felt about it at the time. Why do I want to do that to you, you might ask? I don’t really know why anyone listens to me anymore, I’m obviously a pathological liar.
Below is my review and breakdown of some of the currently running and ending shows. If you haven’t yet seen a specific entry and intend to, skip it and read on by, because there will be SPOILERS.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
In one of the most unexpected (and welcomed) turn of events in the history of big budget television, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to completely surprise and delight me. Eventually. Initially I, like most of you, was quite underwhelmed with the not-so-humble beginnings, and most of us, though recognising the potential inherent, felt disappointed with the slow, clunky story and hammy acting. I persevered with it, though admittedly I was letting the show run, largely ignored, until I had three to four episodes to watch in a row (this, if you ask me, is the superior method of viewing). On the whole, I’m very glad I did.
The last third of the season was leaps and bounds ahead of its first two in terms of action, intrigue and betrayal. I loved Bill Paxton in his role; the transformation of would-be buddy to totally camp psychopath was delicious, and I was happy to see them finally do something interesting with Agent Grant Bored. The season finale was extremely enjoyable, and having Mr. Whedon pen the script for it was a wise choice. The banter and dialogue was decidedly Whedonesque, and that is never a bad thing.
Will I be tuning in for Season 2? Mos def. Even though I dislike 90% of the characters in it. Agent May kicks arse though, doesn’t she?

Arrow
After what I believed to be a solid start, my interest began to wane in Arrow from about the mid-way point, all the way to the end of this second season. Why am I complaining? Well, I’m not entirely sure. I love Crixis/Slade. The island scenes are there, I’ve always preferred those over the present day Starling City scenes. Malcom Merlyn resurfaced a couple of times (yay, a Barrowman appears!). Oliver Queen is still shirtless and smexy. The action sequences were wonderfully… actiony. They even killed off the mother! It was probably too much to ask for a double whammy of mother and daughter murderage, but man, that would have been really nice.
So yes, all of the good bits I liked from the first season were all there. But is it just me, or has that show just grown in puke-inducing cornyness? Has it always been like that? I found myself cringing an awful lot while watching the back end of this second season. Every time someone said “mirakuru”, I shuddered. Every time Roy pissed and moaned, I groaned. And every single time I saw formerly high school girl Thea running a NIGHT CLUB in the “Glades” I wanted to throw things at her lollipop-head. In the space of a few episodes I’d turned on Laurel Lance, too. So much so, that at the end of that staged showdown where Slade reinacts the scene on the island and forces Oliver to choose between Felicity and Laurel, I crossed my fingers in vain hope that they wouldn’t have a back-up plan to save EVERYONE. And as for the Olicity will they/won’t they stupidity, I really don’t give a continental crap.
To be brutally honest with myself, I’m not really sure if my interest in Arrow will continue next season. Oliver is off the island in flashback land, and apparently knew Waller and A.R.G.U.S. long before we believed he did, and now we get to find out how he learned to fly a plane. Yawn.
But pay no mind to any of that, check out this video of Caity Lotz’s (Black Canary) amazing moves! Now I understand why they cast her.
I most likely will watch a few episodes of Season 3, however. I owe The Vigilante that much for the hours of shirtless entertainment he provided.
Verdict: UNDECIDED.

Bitten
Welcome a new one to the fold. Despite this being lauded as rubbish by the majority of people whose opinions I actually listen to (including Kev of The Mental Attic), when I saw it pop up on Netflix almost straight after its TV run finished, I decided to give it a whirl. It’s just as bad as everyone says it is, but I watched it all anyway, so it must have some positives. This Scyfy/Space venture is all about a pack of wolves. I want to say werewolves, but they never actually call themselves that. Anywho, it stars Laura Vandervoort (remember her from Smallville?) as Elena, who is a special snowflake. She’s the only woman EVER to survive the change. She’s also a super tracker and she’s the best at everything. Not just that, but she’s the only real female lead and the show suffers from “when the female lead isn’t in the room everyone should be talking about the female lead” syndrome, and all of the mens love her and want to howl at her moons.
Yet aside from the plethora of Mary Sue traits that Elena exhibits, I do love me some supernatural elements, and I’ve had enough of tween vampire shows for now. The content of Bitten is decidedly more adult, and they’re not beyond showing sexytime or some pretty gruesome murder scenes. It’s based on a book, so I can’t entirely blame the writers for Elena’s poor characterisation, or Vandervoort for her attempt at making this annoying female protagonist likeable. It has wolves and fight scenes and shirtlessness and boobs, so okay, points for that. Will I be watching the next season if it gets renewed? Probably. Would I recommend it to you, discerning readers? Probably not.
Verdict: MISS.

Game of Thrones
I know this hasn’t finished yet, but how could I compile a list of stuff I’ve watched, and not include Game of Thrones!? With the departure of our dear Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones has now become The Best Thing On TV (™). Never before has a show been so much FUN. Twitter blows up at the slightest plot twist. You can make an enemy of a stranger if you dare to discuss/spoil the latest episode in public. We chat about it in work, we cheer for the deaths of those characters we love to hate and we stare in slack-jawed shock when a beloved character is stabbed or beheaded or put on trial for treason. Well, okay, I don’t personally, because I’ve read the books (/smug), but watching everyone else’s reactions is equally as gratifying.
This season has seen an epic amount of bloodshed, and in true Game of Thrones fashion, it’s set to only increase. Joffrey drew his last breath during The Purple Wedding, with Tyrion, everyone’s favourite imp, being tried for his murder. Queen Khaleesi is crucifying slavers. Littlefinger rescued Sansa, put the moves on her and then threw his new wife out of the moon door. (Lord Robin: GOT MILK?) A Prince from Dorne steps in to take on The Mountain. The Hound and Arya bond, and some mad crap is happening with White Walker babies beyond the wall. Huzzah!
Verdict: HIT.

Justified
Probably the most consistently entertaining show on my schedule. I’ve always enjoyed Justified, and I don’t think there has been a “weak” season so far among its five. It’s violent and uncouth, and it has a cowboy Timothy Olyphant in it. What’s not to like? It’s also the first piece of television programming that made me want to go to Kentucky and see all of those good old fashioned southern boys for myself. This season ended with a teaser for what is to come for the next, and final instalment of the Raylan versus Boyd epic. Personally I think it has another couple of seasons left in it, and I’ll be sorry to see it end, but we all know it’s better for a loved show to go out with a bang rather than a neutered whimper.

Once Upon A Time
Why in the name of all that is holy am I still watching this. I’d stopped actually, months ago, but then the season ended so I decided to go back and watch everything I’d missed, one episode after another. I think Once Upon A Time is the only TV program in the history of TV programs that doesn’t lend itself well to the binge watch. This is because everything is fresh in your memory, so the plot holes and continuity ridiculousness are all the more glaringly obvious. The whole season was really bad. I thought the finale was enjoyable, to a degree, but then all of those scenes at the end felt so “tacked on” I got really browned off. And Frozen next season? Really? Way to cash in on that mammoth Disney cow. Not to mention the two characters sharing the one heart. WTF? I understand the idea, like two people being so close and in love they share the same heart and it’s a sweet sentiment and all, but literally? Come on, in real life you’d be dead in six months.
Phil Collins seems to know what they’re talking about:

And though I <3 Robert Carlyle and Lana Parrilla too, and Irish Hook is damn dreamy, I’ll have to say so long Once Upon A Time. It’s been magically not delicious.

Revolution
I’d watched the very first episode of Revolution as soon as it aired, as I’d been looking forward to it. Then I decided I didn’t like it and forgot about it completely, until Tim The Film Guy suggested I give it another whirl. So, taking his advice, I did just that. And I was glad that I did. A half dozen eps in and I was hooked. I was surprised to realise that I was thoroughly enjoying it. Then the second season rolled around, and while it wasn’t to the same standard of intrigue that it’s predecessor had been, I was still liking the cut of its jib.
Proceedings started to get a little iffy though with the crazy Nano storyline. There all of these clueless plebs were, running around, pointlessly sticking the pointy ends of swords into each other, when all the while this evolving technology wielded the power to wipe every single person out in the blink of an eye. You could say that’s an interesting dynamic, but to be honest, I really hated the Aaron/Priscilla/Nano scenes. All I wanted was to see Mofo Miles Matheson kick some Patriot rear, and evil Gus Fring Tom Neville do clever, sinister things. Alas, it turns out that none of this really matters, because Revolution got cancelled.
They were cancelled before they even had a chance to wrap things up adequately. This season has, of course, already been filmed and will end on a cliffhanger. Revolution won’t be back for another and we’ll have no closure. As such, it’s been hard to bring myself to watch the last few episodes, and I find myself unable to recommend a series I know to be already doomed.
Verdict: MISS.

Among others, I’ve also been watching Suits, Black Sails, The Blacklist and American Horror Story, though I’m enjoying each of them, I haven’t yet seen enough of any of them to include here. That’s all I’ve got for you on this rainy Irish eve my friends. I’ve been listening to Phil Collins since the OUAT segment and I’m getting a bit weepy into my glass of red, so I’ll leave it there. I agree with most of your observations, except that Arrow still gets my vote. I’ll agree that it has dropped off a bit from last season, but it still kept me coming back. And, as you mentioned, Black Canary was a good addition this season.
Revolution only kept me watching for a handful of episodes. Ditto with Agents of Shield, but based on your review, I think I’m going to give it another go.
A couple of other shows I’ve been watching are The 100 and the Originals. Thank God for CW. I’m also looking forward to Halle Berry in her new show Extant.
Finally, whatever offers you get for the statue, I’ll double. :)

For a long time Arrow was one of my favourites, so I’m probably being too hard on it. Black Canary was definitely one of the bright spots for me this season.
SHIELD might be worth a second look. They definitely upped their game towards the end, and the direction they’ll take for next season looks like it could be interesting. There’s definitely something to be said for watching the episodes together. If you do go back to it, I hope I haven’t spoiled too much for you!
I’ve never heard of The 100! I looked it up there, it looks interesting, think I’ll see if I can grab the first couple of eps for tomorrow night’s viewing. :D As for Extant, looking forward to that. Summer can be a bit of a slow month for TV, so I’m hoping it’s as good as it sounds.

Well, I’ve been a vampire fan for decades so I like it quite a bit. Obviously it has some of the flavor of the Vampire Diaries, but I think that it’s more like a melding of Vampire Diaries and Underworld. It’s been picked up for a second season, so I’m hoping that it avoids falling to the scourge of the sophomore curse that often brings down shows that I like.
Someday we’re going to have to do a simultaneous transcontinental binge watch of a show that we both like. :)

I like the idea that it’s moved away a little from TVD feel. It’s nice to watch a vamper romper without any pesky high school kids running around, getting in the way of all the murderage. :D Since it has been picked up for another season, I think I’ll go back and rewatch from the beginning.
I like this idea, that would be so much fun. We could do a live IM/email session as we watched too. Oh, and I started watching The 100, just on the second ep now, I’m really digging it. Cool premise!

Like S.H.I.E.L.D. quite a bit. Although you list it as a miss, Revolution and Once Upon a Time kept me engaged. Like you, though, I rolled my eyes at the Frozen thing, too. Of course, with their strong ties to Disney, I guess it makes sense, but yeah… It felt too much like they just tacked on to the movie’s popularity.

The funny thing is, before I found out Revolution had been cancelled I would have recommended it to most! It has been a hit for me up until now, I guess I just couldn’t put it forward knowing that someone starting to watch it now would never get any closure. I was pretty surprised to find out it was getting the axe, it’s a good show.
It’s a shame too that I lost patience with OUAT, there was a time (back in the first season) when I was really, really enjoying it. Are there any other shows you watch and would recommend, Kitt?

Very true. That series too can be very time consuming, as the books are quite big and it’s hard to put them down again once you get going. ;)
They are worth it though. Having said that, I know a lot of people who plan to read the books only when the TV series ends, so as not to spoil the show.

The books are definitely better. At least, IMO they are! I usually prefer the book to the onscreen adaptation, even though I think they’re doing an excellent job with GoT. If you started now, you could probably catch up to the show by the time next season rolls around. ;)

I gave up on Shield, I was getting frustrated with the villain of the week approach. I’ve heard though it’s actually changed and the 2nd part of the season all the episodes actually relate to each other more.
Loving Game of Thrones though, it’s just amazing at the moment. I caught up with the 3 episodes I missed from Mexico back to back. Didn’t want it to end.

Yes, with SHIELD they began to tie things in with an overall arc toward the end, but it did take a long time to get there, and the first half of the season definitely felt like a bit of a slog to me.
Nice! I love it when I have a few eps to watch together, though it’s too hard to let GoT run that long without me watching it. I should take a trip to Mexico so I can binge when I get back. ;D

Despite the season finale being a little to close to last season’s finally, I would consider Arrow a “HIT”. The season really picked up once Slade emerged as the main villain. It made up for the silly election stuff in the first ten or so episodes.

That’s a good point; once Slade emerged the storyline definitely became more interesting, and we had less of the likes of the election stuff, alcoholism, etc.

Sad to hear that Arrow is on the decline. I haven’t watched the show, but other people I know have also commented that the finale is losing the plot despite setting up some good stuff earlier in the season. Perhaps the Flash show will be better.
Is the statue you posing in a bikini? I might travel to Risa to check it out.

Aside from Mirakuru, I did like Arrow. I’m not entirely convinced about the Waller thing in the past, but I’ll give them a chance to convince me. And (shaking fist to the sky) BARROWMAN!!!!!! But yes, Thea is annoying, but I’m hoping she’ll be back as a badass Mini-Barrowman :)
Also, Arrow-related, I want Flash!
Oh, and yes, Olicity is bollocks now. They shied away from an actual character development there, which is very unlike Arrow writers to be honest!

I’m trying to convince myself that Flashback land will still be as good, because as we saw in the beginning of Arrow, Oliver still ends up back on the island. Somehow. So there will be more island stuff in the future, but what kind of form that will take, who knows. The Thea/Malcolm stuff could potentially be very interesting, and I’ve no doubt he’ll subject her to lots of crazy training. She could end up being like an assassin or something. Which would actually be kind of cool.
Looking forward to The Flash too! The teasers look like a lot of fun.
Yes! Exactly. They seem to just be drawing the Olicity thing out to keep the shippers on the hook. She could end up being his Happily Ever After, but if they keep playing it like this it will feel forced and rushed at the end. Or they could kill her off. Which would be interesting, character developmentally, of course.
Oh! I started watching Black Sails. Really enjoying it, too. Good tip that was.

The cast on Agents of Shield is so photogenic but I couldn’t get into it. I know what you mean about Arrow. It’s lost its Mojo and I will slap the next person who mentions mirakuru (no caps, thats how annoyed I am with it!).

Ha, well…there is Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire which are ace. Fargo has got off to a good start. Sons of anarchy used to be ok but is a bit naff now. True Blood is just so ridiculous and tongue in cheek that I kind of like it

Can’t wait for Boardwalk Empire to return, that’s a great show too. As for True Blood… LOL. I don’t know why I’m still watching it, but I’ll be tuning in for this last season. I think you must be right, the ridiculousness of it definitely has an appeal.

Good post, I always like reading reviews from my fellow TV peeps. I also hate hate hate Once upon a Time, so many people love it, but I just think it’s a bit ridiculous. I myself have mixed thoughts on Scandal. Some episodes I love and some parts of it are annoying, but overall it is a pretty good show, I have seen much worse. Orphan Black is awesome it won’t disappoint!

I think we’ll probably need to give it a few episodes next season before we can feel as though our time invested in SHIELD will be completely worth it, but I’m feeling a little more positive about it than I did back in the beginning.

I gave up on Revolution in the first season because I just wasn’t into it and could tell it was going to get canceled and not wrap up anyway. Game of Thrones is definitely the best show on TV now, but how long is it taking for the White Walkers to do anything or the Wildling army to get to the Wall? Put a little pep in your step!

The “waiting for shit to happen” element of GoT is probably the worst aspect of the show. I’m hoping it will pay off in climax though, like good sexytime.

Totally agree with you on SHIELD and Arrow V, the former is definitely becoming must watch whereas the latter has dropped off a little. The prob with Arrow is that it’s trying far too much to be Batman…with a bow and arrow.
But psyched for forthcoming comic book tv, Gotham looks potentially awesome and psyched about the Netflix Daredevil series. Hoo-rah!

Yes! We have lots upcoming to look forward to. We’ll be spoiled for choice with Gotham and Daredevil coming up, as well as checking out The Flash. Bound to be a hit or two among those.

I completely agree with you on SHIELD and GOT. SHIELD got a lot better after the Captain America tie in. Not sure if GOT is my favorite show. Haven’t really assessed it yet.
I know you used to watch Revenge, which was a lot better than season 2 although I’m not sure why I stuck with it.
Revolution was just getting good when it got canceled. Which I guess explains the decision. Just finished watching the finale today. Sad I won’t know how the cliffhanger plays out.
The Blacklist is a great show however I was disappointed with the finale. :(

I haven’t watched the last couple of episodes of Revolution. I’m struggling to bring myself to finish it, as I know that cliffhanger is going to ruffle my feathers.

My favorite drama on TV right now is probably The Walking Dead. I’m completely fascinated not with the zombies per se but by the human decisions made in difficult situations. The societal aspect as well as the breakdown in morality and the degradation of compassion makes the show interesting. Do I think it’s as good as Breaking Bad? No, but it’s amongst the best right now. Oh and the episode The Grove was probably my favorite. It sums up this show.
S2 of Revenge was a set back. I probably like Emily and that’s why I continued to watch it lol Season 3 is more in vein of the first season (still the best). Although the finale was both preposterous and good at the same time. I don’t mind all the questions. :) I watch way too many shows lol
My favorite shows (not dramas) are The Big Bang Theory and Survivor.
Revolution had some of its best stuff towards the end. And yeah the cliffhanger is going to annoy me.

TWD is still a firm favourite of mine too. I know so many people who have given up on it, and while I understand some of their gripes with the show, I believe there is still plenty there to keep me hooked. I loved what they did with Rick’s storyline in particular in the second half of the last season.
If S3 of Revenge is a sort of return to the form of S1 I might just have to give it a second chance. It was always entertaining, brainless watching, I probably shouldn’t be expecting more from it! :D

Season 1 of TWD is my favorite. It is still it’s best. Season 2 was great, but not as superb. Season 3 to me was its weakest, but still better than a whole lot of other shows. Season 4 got back on track. Again the episode “The Grove” with Lizzie was magnificent!
It’s definitely brainless watching, but a huge improvement over season 2.
I loved this past season. I wanted Tony to win. No one played the game as hard. I thought was makes him stand out from say Russell Hantz is that Tony isn’t a jerk. He wasn’t trying to be an ass to people. He just did what needed to be done to win. I respect that. I did like Spencer and Tasha as well.
If Part 2 is as good as the first one I will be happy. I am really exicted for a potential Season 31 and 32. I read from Survivor Whispers that 31 would be Rivals and 32 would be Legends.

The Grove was simply brilliant. That whole ep is up there with my top TV moments.
I wanted Tony to win too, and like yourself, also liked Tasha and Spencer. I was afraid that it would turn out to be a bitter jury and that Tony would struggle against Woo, but I was glad to see them actually vote for the person who played the game. And you’re right, he played it SO hard.
I didn’t know there were rumours about 31 and 32 being Rivals and then Legends. I hope it’s true! There are quite a few players I’d like to see return and play again in a Legends series.

Follow someone on Twitter and have joined their Facebook group and they share many hints and other Survivor info. I think the Rivals and Legends season are being finalized once the show gets picked up again next year. The next two seasons are in Nicaragua, all new contestants and once again a B v. Water theme and then a regular season. There will be Redemption Island on B v W.
I want to see Parvarti and Sandra for sure! Two of the best players.
Tony worked so hard and certainly made the season highly entertaining. His spy shack paid off and fooling them into thinking the special idol could be played one more tribal was genius.

Oh I agree with OUAT comment on the split heart. They don’t like killing many people off. I wonder what happens if they break up. Do they both die? At least Neil died :)

And Neil… Jeez. Everyone was talking about how heart-breaking his death scene was. I’m sorry, that was one of the hammiest examples of acting I’ve ever seen. I nearly laughed out loud. :( I’m going to hell!

Just finished watching it;
Thought it was great! Superb action-packed finale that wrapped up certain things whilst leaving others still in the balance. Fury cameo was ace & Garrett’s death (both of them) were brutal. Amazing how much it improved after a rather awful first 10 or so episodes. Can’t wait for season two!

Hey, V. I’m in the last season and on episode 9, I think. That’s when Walt just buried his money in the desert. It’s my first time watching it, and I’m going to miss these characters when I finish the series very soon : ) But I still have my “True Blood” and “The Walking Dead” and “Sons of Anarchy” and “Game of Thrones” to keep me busy. Plus I can start watching and reviewing more movies again.
I wish I was rich so I can spend more time watching shows/movies — and do more road trips.

We’re lucky that these days we have a lot of really well-written shows to entertain us. Breaking Bad might be my all-time favourite, but now that it’s done we at least can fill that void with the likes of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. :)

I never really invested in HIMYM, though I’ve seen the odd episode here and there, out of sync. I did, however, read a LOT about the finale, because it caused such a stir. A lot of fans felt it was a seriously disappointing cop-out. What did you think about it?

I started watching it because it used to be on before a show I used to watch (which I can’t remember now) and I kind of got hooked. It wasn’t the best show but dear goose, the finale was dire. I already deduced *MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT* that the mother was…well you know. (not such a spoiler after all) but she was just so adorable.
I’m catching up on box sets. Just finished The Wire (about nine years too late) and can you believe I haven’t watched Breaking Bad? Very excited. I love your TV round ups!
