[NEWS] The Monday Spew (16th June 2014)

What a busy week this has been. Let us skip the usual preamble though, shall we, and get down to brass business.

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY – Excited gamers everywhere embraced their inner fanboys and girls last week as E3 kicked off. We tuned in from all over the world to salivate over the trailers, previews and reveals that developers and publishers mete out to us in painfully small, but explosive doses. For me, this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo turned out to be far more interesting than the last, despite the next-gen announcements it heralded. What with glimpses of the new Mass Effect in production, that Dragon Age: Inquisition gameplay teaser and Nintendo seriously stepping up their game-plan with their segment, there was a lot to get joygasmic over. If you missed any of it or want to catch up on the notable parts, the team over at Gamers Sphere provided a very definitive breakdown. Did you catch E3? What are you most excited about?

You know what else started last week!? THAT’S RIGHT, THE WORLD CUP! By the old gods and the new, there’s nothing like a non-stop tournament of sporting goodness to excuse this glorious football binge-watch and the consumption of copious amounts of beer. Events kicked off in Brazil last Thursday, and we’ve been in our element ever since. Despite the noted lack of Ireland, World Cup 2014 has still been an exciting, and wholly unpredictable affair so far. Is your country represented within the 32 nations taking part? Tell me what you think your chances are below!

KHAL DROGO & THE SEVEN SEAS – And now, back to regular old movie news. It was reported last week that Jason Mamoa (Game of Thrones) has been cast as Aquaman and will appear in the upcoming Bats Vs Supe before being added to the Justice League roster. Many find this decision odd, and while I’d agree that it’s an unanticipated move, I think it could turn out to be quite inspired. Neither Mamoa nor his agent have confirmed this rumour, and personally I don’t expect them to. At least, not until Comic-Con.

Mostly all was quiet in TRAILERTOWN this week. Or it was until I had the misfortune of stumbling across the Dumb And Dumber To trailer. It left me feeling nauseous.

NO KESSEL RUNNING FOR CAPTAIN SOLO – Harrison Ford broke his ankle while filming a scene aboard the Millenium Falcon for the upcoming epic, Star Wars: Episode VII. Reports now suggest that Ford may be off his feet for up to two months. The Spew wishes the old rogue a light-speedy recovery, and hopes that Pinewood Studios has good insurance.

It turns out that Guillermo del Toro has been penning a sequel to PACIFIC RIM IN “SECRET”. My initial reaction was that del Toro is obviously a really bad secret-keeper, but then I thought that maybe his intention was to spark fans’ interest, which, in turn, might put some pressure on Legendary Pictures to give Pacific Rim 2 the green light. Del Toro also confirms that characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) are set to return. Uh… yay, I guess?

And finally, let us take a moment to mourn yet another passing of yet another fantastic season of Game of Thrones. THE BEST THING ON TV (™) closed up shop last night, and their gates aren’t due to reopen for another ten months at least, leaving us with a gaping hole in our weekly viewing and me bereft of anything interesting with which to spark discussion amongst my otherwise boring colleagues. Still though, it was a grand finale, wasn’t it? And a pretty crappy way for a certain GoT daddy to spend Father’s Day.

I’ve had a busy couple of weeks, what with all of the football and season two of Orange is the New Black on Netflix and the fact that for some reason unknown to even myself I decided to play and complete Pokemon X in twenty-four hours without sleeping. As such, it has been a while since I last posted. Not that that’s a bad thing, I did feel the need to lay low a little, what with the tragic aftermath of Bellybutton-gate that [FILM] Pompeii provoked. I will blame scheduling conflicts for the lateness of this week’s Spew. Yesterday wasn’t completely wasted however, as I managed to con my father into doing a special film-related interview that I hope to post during the week.

And so, Sunday Shout-Outs become Monday Shout-Outs! Recently many of us featured in the Oracle of Film‘s Question of the Month segment. This time we took on our least favourite Comic Book Movie. We also had three words each to describe King Joffrey. To celebrate twenty years of Pulp Fiction (omg, I’m old), my buddy NiMac is hosting a Royale With Cheeseathon. So, if you’re a Tarantino fan and want to get in on the cheesy lurve, head on over there. MovieRob and Zoë from The Sporadic Chronicles of a Beginner Blogger are also planning on hosting a special blogathon; this one to focus on the prolific work of Hitchcock. You can get in on that action here.

In the spirit of WC2014, Screenkicker! gives us Top 5 Football Films – World Cup Special, with hilarious team comparisons. And in keeping with the sport theme, Ryan from Ten Stars Or Less drops in on Zoë and gifts us all with the ingenious Superheroes Hockey Team – a dream team line-up comprised of some seriously powerful players.

Curious about A Million Ways To Die In The West? I was, until I read a few of the reviews. Beermovie.net and Digital Shortbread take on Seth MacFarlane’s latest big-screen attempt. I had the opportunity to see The Lego Movie last weekend, and man, everything really was awesome. Three Rows Back summed up precisely how I felt about it. If you’re as excited about How To Train Your Dragon 2 as I am, then Mr. Movie‘s fair and detailed review might just tide you over until you get the chance to see it.

The talented Anna from Film Grimoire struck more than a few chords with her Thoughts on… Jesus Camp (2006). Check it out, it’s a thought-provoking one. Fellow Mass Effect enthusiast Rhio, from Adventures of a Girl Gamer, brought us her take on Watch_Dogs, with style, as per usual.

I’ve lost count of the amount of times that The IPC has been commandeered, but I can’t argue with the results. Zoë’s reign of generosity gifted us with Afternoon Special for the Ladies. She bestowed upon us a post of epic droolage proportions. Fancy a lunchtime snack? Get over there and feast your eyes on that treasure trove of TASTAY. Then came Man of Mystery, Miguel. With many strokes of brilliance, he gave us his Top Ten Favorite Movie Deaths. I don’t know who you are, Miguel, but I like the cut of your jib. Let’s talk.

And so endeth this latest edition of The Spew. Until next time, mes amis, I will leave you with something pugilicious. As is tradition.

Me last Saturday.

Me last Saturday.

  1. Poor Harrison Ford. I wonder if he’ll spend the entire film sitting down now.

    • People are suggesting they can green-screen anything these days, but I hope he gets back on his feet. They could always write in some freak accident into the script though… :o

  2. Thanks for the pulpy shout-out, V … but you’re not old at all: You wouldn’t have even been allowed in to the Savoy to see Pulp Fiction. :)

  3. E3 just reminds me I need to save up for a Xbox One. 2015 will be a good year for games. Speaking of games, will you being posting your Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us commentary anytime in the foreseeable future?

    Like

    • Well there’s nothing big coming for this summer, except maybe The Last of Us remastered for PS4. Anything else worth looking at is Fall 2014 or next year, like you said. So you’ve plenty of time to save for the XBone. I’m off work this week so I’m hoping to get an episode written up. At least one. If I don’t then I’ll have wasted my week off and FAIL. I miss doing those though.

      • They were good fun. I think the latest Batman game comes out in November, if you liked Arkham. Also Farcry 4 if you ever played that series. Otherwise, you might as well wait till the new year.

        • I’ll definitely be playing the new Batman. Though I finished my new PC build about a month ago, so I reckon I’ll be playing everything on it for a long while.

  4. Hey V have you played the latest Walking Dead episode?

  9. Thanks for the mention buddy. And poor old Harrison ‘miserable bastard’ Ford.

  10. If they let Harrison Ford have some fun with it, I think they should write the broken ankle into the script.

The Superheroes Hockey team brought on a few chuckles for me. But I do think that Black Widow ought to be the starting goalie. :)

Finally, I don’t expect that we’ll be seeing the USA in the World Cup finals. :(

    • I agree! Like, he’s no spring chicken any more. They could write it in and let him zip around the place on a repulsor sled. Awesome.

USA did well last night, JF! This WC has been one of surprises, you can’t discount anyone yet. ;) *PMA*

  11. The World Cup! Naturally, my team is the USA, and, with a new coach, they managed to beat Ghana today. My second favorite has always been Brazil, but they are a far cry from the wonderful team of the past and better get their act together and play as if they want to win.

    Like

    • Really enjoyed the USA match last night! I’m always delighted to see them do well, and I’m very pleased they’re a part of WC2014. That group though, we’re calling that “The Group of Death”. Germany and Portugal will be tough. Though I would have said the same about Ghana, so we’ll just have to wait and see!

Brazil have been disappointing. Their opening game was all over the place.

  12. OMG PARTY PUGS WIN ALL!!!!! Yeah I think Jason Mamoa could totally work as Aquaman! I’m still not sure about Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, that frail little thing…But we’ll see. Fingers crossed. Agreed on GoT. EPIC season. As for Pacific Rim, it was fun, but…a sequel? Whhhhyyyyy? So not necessary.

Oh, God. V, Miguel says he wants to talk, too. Are you sure you want to open that door? You don’t know what he’s capable of… *shudder*

  13. I truly hope to goodness there is NOT a second Pacific Rim. What a waste!

Fantastic round up of all things here, and thanks a million for the shout outs!

    • You appear to have bumped your keyboard there Zoe, giving the impression you would not love to see Pacific Rim 2. Don’t worry, I know you have better taste than that. I’m secretly hoping for Pacific Rim vs Godzilla or some such awesomeness.

      Like

      • Oh dear, I did not realise it was such a noticeable bump!

        Like

        • I’m not sure about a Pacific Rim 2 myself, but Pacific Rim vs Godzilla!? Mega crossover! This time though can we just have an entire film about creatures and giant mechs fighting each other. For two hours. No humans please, humans ruined those movies.

          Like

          • You see. I could get on board with that more than another Pacific Rim… maybe we need to start a petition…? We could totally skip the humans. Especially that girl from Pacific Rim. MEH.

  14. Awesome work V. Always love this feature. Especially when you are brilliant enough to link to something of mine. Always appreciated and great that you take the time to highlight the work of other folk.

  15. Thanks so much for the shoutout, V! :) Jesus Camp was a difficult film to watch and write about but I’m glad I did. I can’t believe they’re thinking of doing a Pacific Rim 2, what a silly idea. It’ll make a lot of money though, which I suppose is the main goal! How did you like Pokemon X?

    Like

    • Very welcome, Anna! I can definitely appreciate how difficult that must have been to watch, and then to write about. As for Pac Rim 2, it probably will make a lot of money, I’d wager double what the first one made.

I enjoyed Pokemon X! Though found it a hell of a lot easier than the previous Pokemons I’ve played. My main was majorly over-levelled, and all of my alts were always at least 10+ levels above anything I had to battle. Still though, a nice improvement gameplay-wise, and it looked good on the 3DS. Have you played? What did you think?

      Like

      • Yeah, I found it extremely easy as well, but still a lot of fun! The graphics were beautiful. I finished it all though and now I’m not sure what else to do in the game. I just keep rolling around on my blades and occasionally changing my character’s haircut!

        • Aren’t the skates great? I didn’t use the bike once. I noticed a few people are doing some sort of “swap” challenge; where they start again but using whatever random pokemon they get through the swap feature. I might do that!

  16. The casting for Superman vs Batman is so bizarre. At least Mamoa is built like a superhero.

    Like

    • It is very bizarre. I hope the majority of them are very small parts. And it’s kind of annoying me that this news is trickling out, bit by bit, and the actual film isn’t due out for years.
