I had originally planned on sharing with you all an extensive Spew Guide to St. Paddy’s Day, but as I told Niall the other day, proceedings came to an abrupt halt following the “Knacker-Drinking on the Canal” segment. I had genuinely intended on completing it, but, well, I got kind of distracted.
So instead I will gift to you a charmingly precious recount of the Story of St. Patrick, as told by a schoolchild and recorded in a classroom in Dublin during the 1960s. These recordings were collected, remastered and animated by the Oscar-nominated Brown Bag Films, and would later become known as “Give Up Yer Aul Sins”. They would also prove that nobody tells a story quite like a Dub does.
Don’t forget that The Begorrathon, as part of Ireland Month, will be ongoing throughout March, and that The Great Irish Care Package will be up for grabs from yours truly for the paltry price of a post celebrating something Irish. Be sure to link to myself here at the Spew, Niall over at The Fluff is Raging, or Cathy at 746 Books for a chance to be in it to win it.
Wherever you are in the world, and however you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, I hope you have a good one. As is tradition, I will leave you with these adorably Irish-looking little chaps, and thank Mr. JF Owen for knowing that it is always appropriate to send me Pictures of Pugs in Costumes.

Are you celebrating today? A pint of stout? A green hat? A hearty jig? Let me know. Agus Lá Fhéile Pádraig shona daoibh!
Great post V, have a great time celebrating my blogging sister.

Love the Give Up Yer Aul Sins collection! They might be all bible stories, but it’s great that you don’t have to be religious to enjoy them.

“Proceedings came to an abrupt halt following the ‘Knacker-Drinking on the Canal’ segment.” Well, who hasn’t been side-lined by that? Happy St. Patrick’s Day; thanks for the Care Package Contest and the Begorrathon shoutout. I will raise a 2 litre bottle of cider in your honour. :)

I hope it’s a 2 litre bottle of Linden Village you’re raising in my honour Niall, cuz you know, I’m a classy mott. Scrumpy is also acceptable.

Now that was an entertaining story. I always love listening to the little ones when they recite their version of a complicated tale. Their ability to remember and weave together the minute details is truly amazing. I wonder if she grew up to be a writer?

Mary was always my favourite, and I’ve tried to find out what happened to her since but there’s no information. I’ve heard interviews and read forum posts from classmates and students of the school though, who all have fond memories of that class as their teacher was one of very few who didn’t implement corporal punishment or use violence or fear to teach. She fostered in them a desire to learn for themselves, which was extremely rare in inner city Dublin (and Ireland in general) during the sixties. Aside from St. Patrick, my favourite was probably the Story of John the Baptist. Mary again, wonderfully spun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dMOk4EQybQ

Oh my goodness!!! Too much cuteness in one post w/ those adorable pugs. I actually dedicated a post for St Paddy’s Day and wore green to work. Hey everyone’s Irish on March 17 right? ;)

I saw your Paddy’s Day post on Twitter, though there was so much going on that I didn’t get a chance to read it properly, so I’ll head back over and give it the appreciation it deserves! Also, I’m so impressed by you wearing green to work, love it. Good woman yourself. ;D

He..he.. I actually made sure to remember to wear green every St Paddy’s Day. It helps that I have a green pea-coat too. It’s always been a dream of mine to visit Ireland!!

Those recordings are so adorable. I love listening to them; it’s the enthusiasm of the kids that is so cute.

They’re really brilliant. How can you not love a recording of a child describing John the Baptist as a “SHOCKIN’ holy saint!” :D
