The Liebster Award (Take Two)

Since being nominated for my very first award last week I have received no less than three other nominations for the Liebster from three of my favourite blogs. I am deeply appreciative of and honoured by their recognition. I’m still in shock at the idea that other people actually read my stuff. Apologies for my tardiness in responding folks, and I hope you don’t mind but I’ve decided to merge all of the questions into one giant award acceptance uni-post.

LiebsterAward2

For anyone unfamiliar with the wanton award that has spread through the blogosphere like Chlamydia, here be the rules:

1. Post the Liebster Award graphic on your site.
2. Thank the blogger who nominated your blog.
3. The nominee is asked to write 11 facts about themselves.
4. Answer the 11 questions from the post of the person who nominated them.
5. The nominee will nominate 9 other blogs.
6. The nominee will then create 11 questions of their own for their nominated bloggers to answer in their Liebster post.

For the next portion I’m tasked with divulging eleven facts about myself. Since I’ll be responding to three nominations I hope it’s okay that I keep this to the requisite eleven, as I don’t think I could handle thirty-three, and besides, it would remove all of my mystery and then nobody would want to see me naked.

1. Sometimes, when I’m walking through town with my headphones on I like to pretend that the music playing is my background theme and I’m starring in a movie about some kick ass chick who is on her way to exact a righteous vengeance on her foes. Try it, I guarantee you it is impossible NOT TO STRUT.

2. I hate shopping. Unless it is shopping for games or DVDs. Or shoes, I ****ing love shoes.

3. I’m a Size 3 (UK) shoe.

4. I can read backwards, upside-down and mirror reflected text at a normal speed.

5. I once fell off a bar in NYC on St. Patrick’s Day because I was drunk and dancing with wild inebriated abandon upon it. I had a massive bruise that resembled Australia on my arse for weeks.

6. The first video game I ever played was called Flimbo’s Quest, and it was on the Commodore 64.

7. At a job interview once when asked by an insufferable HR manager what my greatest weakness was (don’t you hate that question?) in a fit of pique I answered with “kryptonite”. I didn’t get the job but I left the interview feeling awesome.

8. Last year while on a holiday in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, I thought it would be an absolutely fabulous idea to go for a swim in the sea at 5.00am fully clothed and armed with my purse and phone. It really didn’t end well. In my defense, I was quite tipsy.

9. Lately by Stevie Wonder never fails to make me tear.

10. I have a massive secret crush on Simon Baker. Every time he smiles on-screen I feel gooey inside.

11. I’m off to Vegas in less than a month! CHICKEN DINNER!

My first nomination came from Confessions of a Nerf Herder. I cannot begin to express how fantastic this blog is. One of the very first I ever followed; I check in multiple times daily for all of my nerdy news and updates. It’s a fantastic resource and I highly recommend it. Now, for the questions that CULTUREDLEFTPEG asked of me:

1. Who’s your favourite comic-book character and why?
Probably Deadpool. I love an anti-hero and a part of me delights in the breakage of the fourth wall. And who doesn’t love a slice of witty repartee banter while indulging in kicking ass? I also have a lady crush on Emma Frost.

2. What’s your favourite Star Wars film and why?
The Empire Strikes Back. To sum up precisely why I must quote Clerks: “Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader’s his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that’s what life is, a series of down endings.”

3. If you had to listen to one film’s soundtrack/score for the rest of your days, what would it be?
Jurassic Park. I can’t articulate just how much that movie means to me, and how just hearing the opening score is enough to give me delicious tingles. John Williams is a genius.

4. If you could be in one band for one weekend, which band would it be?
One Direction. I’d bask in the obsessive love of my legions of frothing pubescent fangirls and then maybe drive myself and my bandmates off a cliff in our tour bus.

…That was a bit extreme wasn’t it?

5. Breasts or bum fan?
I like ALL the body parts.

6. If you were on death row, about to be giving the chair, what would your last meal consist of?
A fillet steak cooked medium rare, topped with raw onions served with creamy mashed potatoes and smothered in a pepper sauce. Washed down with a cold, frosty beer.

7. If you had a lightsaber, what colour would it be?
Green. In all of my Jedi fantasies my lightsaber is always green.

8. Favourite Batman?
We only had a very interesting Keaton vs Bale argument the other night in the pub. Someone threw Clooney into the ring but they were instantly ostracized. I think I’d have to go with Bale.

9. Affleck as Batman? Yay or nay?
Neither really, I will wait to reserve judgment on Batfleck before I register my disgust (or delight!) throughout the world.

10. Favourite death scene in a film?
This is probably going to be completely out-there, but Samuel L. Jackson’s character Russell Franklin in the film Deep Blue Sea. Yes, the movie was a cheese-fest and yes it was wholly unrealistic in an eye-rolling way, but that death scene was just BRILLIANT. Sam L & Co. find themselves in the unenviable position of having to outwit and outswim genetically modified super sharks and he takes it upon himself to rouse the troops with an awesome speech about sticking together and once he reaches the climax of his monologue… NOM! He’s swallowed by a shark that came out of nowhere, HAHA! I saw this in the cinema and I couldn’t stop laughing for about ten minutes, which mortified my companion.

11. When are cord flares going to be deemed fashionable again? Seriously, the looks I get…
Wait, they’re not fashionable?

Nomination numero two came from the fabulous folks over at 1001-Up. This is your one-stop-shop for all of your gaming needs and news. Kimmy, P-Diddy and W1ngman run a highly entertaining yet informative ship, and their level of interaction with their readers and followers is inspirational. Here are their wonderful questions:

1. Describe yourself in five words.
Fun-sized (that counts as one word), verbose, stubborn, open, independent.

2. What would you rather be and why: a zombie, a werewolf or a vampire?
Werewolves are significantly cooler than everything else.

3. If your house was on fire and you had to evacuate immediately, what one thing would you grab on your way out?
My phone. Everything is on my phone, it is my window to the outside world.

4. What’s the one piece of advice you wish someone had told you when you were growing up?
Don’t sweat the small stuff.

5. If you were immortal for a day, what would you do?
Jump out of a plane with no parachute. Then donate all of my organs. With the exception of my liver, because I don’t think anyone would want that.

6. What’s worse: realising that there’s no ice-cream left, or finding that you have to eat only ice-cream for the rest of your life?
The latter, because I’m not a big ice-cream lover. Now chocolate, that would be a different story. I must consume at least one bar of chocolate per day because it’s the law and trust me, it’s in place for everyone’s safety.

7. If you were suddenly turned into the opposite sex, what would you do?
I really don’t know how to put this delicately, so I will copy one of your other nominees and simply say that I would “get to know myself better”.

8. A question from P-Diddy and W1ngman (take a look at their facts): what’s scarier, waking up and finding a squid or a crab in your bed?
A crab would definitely be scarier. They can pinch you and survive for longer periods out of water. A squid would be easier to deal with because I do a great impression of a squid (you don’t know what they sound like, you can’t tell me I’m wrong) so I could communicate with it and the worst thing it could do to me is ink on me and there are worse stains you could have on your sheets.

9. Tell us a joke (nothing too rude now!).
Paddy Englishman, Paddy Scottishman and Paddy Irishman haven’t seen each other for a year so they meet up for a drink.
During the year all of them have had a son. Paddy Englishman says, “It’s funny because my son was born on Saint George’s day, so we ended up calling him George.”
Paddy Scotsman says, “Man that’s strange because my son was born on Saint Andrew’s day and we called him Andrew.”
Paddy Irishman says, “Jaysus that’s exactly the same thing with my son Pancake.”

10. If there was a holiday in your honour, what would it celebrate?
International Do Nothing Day, and it would celebrate doing nothing, something I do love to do.

11. How now brown cow?
The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain?

Last, but by absolutely no means least, came my nomination from Drakulus. Writing about all things game, film and downright cool, Drakulus has become another staple daily read for me. Posting from within a team that includes his lovely gaming lady wife, for honest and current reviews and articles check him out. Now for the questions!

1. What’s your favorite game to have come out in the last 3 years?
Ooh, this is a tough one. A part of me wants to say ME3 but I can’t bring myself to do it. Considering how much I’ve enjoyed playing The Walking Dead I’ll go with that one. Or maybe Skyrim. Or Diablo 3, I waited so long for it. Last weekend with GTA V has been a lot of fun too… OMG. CAN’T DECIDE.

Oh wait, I forgot about SWTOR. Despite its many flaws I enjoyed the first month of playing The Old Republic so, so much.

2. On a stressful day how do you relax?
It begins just by sitting down. Then I remove my shoes and other restrictive items of clothing. Then I might have a beer or a glass of wine. If I don’t feel like cooking I’ll order something tasty. Depending on what kind of day it was I’ll read if it wasn’t too taxing. If it was the mentally draining kind of day then it’s a brainless FPS or a couple of episodes of something on Netflix.

3. What’s your favorite book?
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire series), a wonderful introduction to an epic saga.

4. What would you do if you were infected by a zombie?
Probably infect everyone else.

5. Werewolves vs Vampires who would win? {I’m not talking about twilight}
Vampires in modern literature and media seem to be heralded as the stronger creature, but I don’t believe it, my money is on the wolf.

6. What’s your favorite strategy game?
Command & Conquer: Red Alert.

7. What’s your all time favorite movie?
The Empire Strikes Back. ;P

8. Who’s your favorite actor?
At the risk of being totally predictable, probably Daniel Day Lewis. His skill is just second to none in my humble opinion!

9. What video game character affected you the most?
Commander Shepard.

10. Do you think games should be allowed to win best picture?
Absolutely. Maybe not Academy Awards per se, but games these days have budgets that rival (and beat) feature films, the production values can equal (and sometimes surpass) them and the stories can be equally as engrossing, often even more so. The gaming industry is a huge one and will only continue to grow, their place among modern accolade institutions outside of their remit is only a matter of time.

11. If you could fly {like Superman} where what would you do? Where would you go?
I’d fly to space and turn back the Earth’s time like in the first Superman movie and then give myself the winning lottery numbers.

As for my own nominees and their questions, I hope to get to that at some stage during the week. My sincere thanks again to Confessions of a Nerf Herder, 1001-Up and Drakulus for the nominations. As always lads, it’s been fun.

I’ll leave you with something I discovered at about 1am this morning on my phone when a certain word under the blog’s Search Engine Terms caught my eye…

I would love to know how this term brought someone to my blog. If you’re still hanging around dude, I hope your caterpillar is okay.

  9. When I really need to concentrate at work (which is rare) I put the Jurassic Park soundtrack on my headphones. I get like 10% of my work accomplished and I feel very proud of myself!

    • And so you should. That’s a great idea. I should do that. Although I probably wouldn’t get 10% done, I’d probably be too distracted thinking about dinosaurs. Or shiny things, or anything really that isn’t work.

I also do wonder about the status of that caterpillar. With enough scientific funding, we can wipe out caterpillar sadness in our lifetime.

    Congrats!

  13. Wow, what a blast from the past. I remember playing Flimbo’s Quest on the flop that was the Commodore 64 console. Oh btw, if someone said Kryptonite was their biggest weakness in an interview I would hire them on the spot.

    Like

    • I have happy memories of Flimbo :D And Klax, remember that? And it’s a shame you weren’t my interviewer! I’d most definitely hire someone who gave me the Kryptonite answer too. Working in HR I’m holding out hope that one day someone will say something extremely nerdy, just like that.

  14. 7 – HR? Do you ask the same insufferable questions when you torment job seekers? I can just imagine… the taped up glasses perched at the tip of the nose… blue eyes searching accusingly for clues of heart failure…
I hope you interview me someday, soon! No, maybe I don’t… I have a sneaky suspicion I’ll come off second best! :-P

    • I swear, I’m a lovely interviewer! Mostly. ;) I’ve only ever had one interviewee take a panic attack. Mwahaha.

I absolutely hate those questions. Unfortunately a lot of the time you simply have to ask them. I always begin by saying, “I know these questions are horribly superfluous, but humour me for a moment.” Once when I was on an interview panel I actually said, “That’s a stupid question, I’m not asking that”, which got me a few strange looks. I think it was the “where do you see yourself in ten years” question. The best answer I ever got for that one was, “Hopefully still alive.”
